Electrolysis - 45 Mins: Aftercare for the First 72 Hours image

A lot of people tell me they’ve seen better results in months with me than they did after years elsewhere, and aftercare is a big part of keeping that progress on track. The single most important rule for the first 24 to 72 hours after electrolysis is simple: keep the treated area clean, cool, and untouched. No heat, no sweat, no sun, no picking. If you’re heading back to work or errands around the Encino, Magnolia Boulevard corridor near the Sherman Oaks border, these steps keep your skin calm and your healing fast.

First 24 hours after electrolysis: keep it clean, dry, and low-drama

Right after your 45-minute session, mild redness or slight swelling can show up. That’s normal. Electrolysis uses a targeted electrical current to permanently eliminate unwanted hair, so your skin needs a short window to settle.

Quick rule for today: If it adds heat, friction, or bacteria, skip it for 24 hours.

Do this on day 0

  • Gently cleanse only, using lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser.
  • Pat dry with a clean towel. No rubbing.
  • Use a cool compress if you feel warm or puffy. Short intervals work best.
  • Leave the area alone. Hands off.

Skip this for 24 hours

  • No makeup on the treated area. This matters most on chin, upper lip, sideburns, and neck.
  • No hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, or hot yoga.
  • No heavy workouts that make you sweat a lot.
  • No alcohol-based toners, fragranced creams, or harsh acne treatments on the area.

24 to 72 hours: sweat, sun, and pools are the usual troublemakers

This is the window where people feel “back to normal” and accidentally irritate the skin. Around Encino and Sherman Oaks, the warm, dry weather and strong sun can sneak up on you fast, especially in summer. I want you protecting the area so you don’t end up with lingering redness, bumps, or a longer healing time.

Your 24 to 72 hour checklist

  • Avoid strenuous exercise if it causes heavy sweating or friction on the treated area.
  • No swimming, hot tubs, or pools. Chlorine and bacteria are not your friend during healing.
  • Avoid direct sun. If the skin is closed and calm, use a broad-spectrum SPF when you’re outdoors.
  • If you’re wearing a mask, helmet strap, or anything that rubs, keep the treated area protected from friction.

Real-world note: A lot of my Encino, Magnolia Boulevard corridor clients book 45-minute sessions because they can fit it into a lunch break or after work. If you’re going right back to a commute or school pickup, your best move is clean skin, no makeup, and keeping the area out of the sun.

The first week: don’t undo good work with tweezing, acids, or picking

If you get tiny scabs, dryness, or a rough patch, don’t panic. It’s usually the skin doing its job. I’ve had so many people come to me after other places left them irritated or scabbing regularly, and they’re relieved when their skin starts healing with minimal redness and swelling. The first week is where patience pays off.

Hard “no” list for the treated area

  • Don’t tweeze, wax, or thread. Let me treat the hairs. Pulling can irritate follicles and can slow your progress.
  • Skip retinoids, chemical exfoliants, and strong acne products until you’re fully healed, usually several days to a week.
  • Don’t scrub, dermaplane, or use gritty exfoliators on the area while it’s healing.
  • If a scab forms, leave it alone. No picking. No peeling.

And a quick reminder: hair grows in cycles. A first-time visitor once told me her chin was only “sore” after her session and she was happy with how it was turning out, even knowing some hairs would come back because of growth cycles. That’s exactly the right mindset for week one.

Simple products that protect electrolysis results (and what to avoid)

I keep aftercare boring on purpose. The goal is calm, clean skin, not a complicated routine. Stick to mild, non-irritating basics until everything looks and feels normal again.

My go-to “keep it calm” kit

  • A gentle, fragrance-free cleanser
  • A fragrance-free moisturizer (use once the skin is closed and not weepy)
  • Aloe-based soothing gel if you like it and your skin tolerates it
  • Broad-spectrum SPF for daytime, especially in the Sherman Oaks and Encino sun

Avoid for now: alcohol-heavy toners, fragranced creams, essential oils, and anything “active” that stings.

If you’re treating multiple zones or a larger area in a 45-minute session, the same rules apply. Just be extra mindful about friction from clothing, waistbands, or straps.

What’s normal after electrolysis, and when I want you to reach out

Most people do well with mild redness, a little swelling, or tenderness that fades pretty quickly. I’ve had clients who used to leave other places irritated and frustrated, then finally felt smooth and irritation-free once they got consistent care and kept their skin protected after appointments. That’s what I want for you.

Reach out if you notice any of these

  • Redness that keeps spreading instead of calming down
  • Increasing pain, heat, or swelling after the first day
  • Pus, crusting that looks infected, or anything that worries you

If you have a question, just reach out. I’d rather you ask early than guess.
