Electrolysis - 15 Mins: Post-Care Timeline & What to Avoid

I hear this a lot: people come to me after getting better results in a few months than they got in years elsewhere. The biggest rule after your 15-minute electrolysis session is simple: keep the treated area clean, cool, and hands-off. For the next 24 to 72 hours, avoid sweating, hot water, sun, and makeup so your skin can settle quickly and heal nicely.
First 24–48 hours after electrolysis: keep it calm, keep it clean
A 15-minute session is quick, but your skin still needs a little quiet time. I often treat small areas like the chin or upper lip in these appointments, and those spots tend to react most when heat, friction, or bacteria get involved.
Do this today: Wash your hands before touching the area, cleanse gently with a mild cleanser, and use a cool compress if you feel warmth or puffiness.
What I generally recommend (and why)
- Skip heavy workouts, saunas, and hot yoga: sweat and heat can keep redness around longer and can irritate freshly treated follicles.
- Avoid hot showers on the area: choose lukewarm water for the first day, especially for face and neck.
- No makeup on the treated area: pores and follicles can be more reactive right after electrolysis.
- Don’t pick, rub, or “check” the skin: this is the fastest way to cause extra irritation, scabbing, or dark marks later.
- Don’t wax or pluck between sessions: I need the hair in the follicle to treat it. If something pops up, let me know and we’ll handle it in your next appointment.
If you’re in Sherman Oaks or around the Encino, Magnolia Boulevard corridor near the Sherman Oaks border, the warm days and sun exposure are real. Treat your skin like it’s in recovery mode for a day or two and you’ll usually heal faster.
Days 3–7: the “don’t make it worse” list (sun, sweat, exfoliation)
Most people are surprised by how normal their skin looks after a short session. I’ve had clients tell me their healing was “beautiful” with minimal redness and swelling, especially when they kept things simple at home. The first week is about avoiding the stuff that creates setbacks.
Sun exposure
Avoid direct sun on the treated area while it’s healing. Once the skin looks calm again, I like SPF 30+ on that spot for 1 to 2 weeks, especially with our year-round sun in Encino and Sherman Oaks.
Exfoliation and actives
Hold off on scrubs, exfoliating acids, retinoids, and anything “tingly” for at least 24 to 72 hours. If you see tiny scabs, pause longer until they’re gone.
Heat and sweat
If you’re prone to redness, keep workouts lighter for a couple days. Sweat sitting on freshly treated skin can irritate it and keep bumps around longer.
And a quick note on results: hair grows in cycles. Even a first-time 15-minute chin session can look encouraging, but it’s normal for some hairs to show up again as new cycles come in. That’s why consistency matters, and why aftercare matters too.
Simple products that protect your electrolysis results (no fancy routine)
If you’re doing electrolysis near me searches, you’re probably also hoping for an easy routine that doesn’t take over your life. Good. After a short session, I’m looking for calm skin, not a complicated shelf of products.
- Cleanser: mild, fragrance-free, and gentle. Think “gets the job done, ” not “deep clean.”
- Soothing layer: a non-comedogenic gel (aloe-style) or a simple, fragrance-free moisturizer works well for most people.
- Hands off: this is honestly the best product you can use. Keep fingers away, and don’t try to pull out hairs that you notice afterward.
- Hydrocortisone: 1% only if I advise it for your situation. It’s not a daily routine item.
If you’re squeezing a 15-minute session into the day along the Encino, Magnolia Boulevard corridor near the Sherman Oaks border, this kind of simple aftercare is what keeps you moving without downtime.
When to text or call me: what’s normal vs what needs eyes on it
A little redness or slight swelling can happen after electrolysis, and it usually settles shortly after treatment. Some people feel sore in spots like the chin for a day. That’s common.
Reach out if you notice any of these
- Bleeding that doesn’t stop or keeps restarting
- Swelling that’s getting worse after the first day
- Spreading redness, increasing pain, or warmth that feels more intense over time
- Any sign of infection (oozing, pus, feverish feeling)
"her insertions are so precise and quick that i often can't even tell when a hair has been removed, and my skin has been healing beautifully afterward with minimal redness, swelling, or irritation."

If something feels off, let me know. I’d rather you reach out early than sit at home wondering if it’s normal.
